BABOUCHES AND WOMEN AT SOLAR CONDES DE RESENDE

17 October 2023

BABOUCHES AND WOMEN AT SOLAR CONDES DE RESENDE

The Shoe Museum exhibition, "Babouches and Women", opens on October 21st at Solar Condes de Resende, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
This exhibition aims to raise a new alert for the increasing acts of violence imposed on Arab women by historically fundamentalist, patriarchal and sexist societies.
Curated by Renata Carneiro, the exhibition was presented to the public in 2013 and then toured in Portugal and France until 2016. In 2021, the Footwear Museum hosted this exhibition, part of the "Shoes that think" Project and, the following year, most of the works were donated and incorporated into our collection. In 2023 "Babuchas and Women" begins a new path, that of a traveling exhibition.
An exhibition-installation that relaunches the invitation to reflection and discussion about the role of Women and their Rights in contemporary society. The exhibition will be open until December 31, 2023.
-------------------------------
[About the exhibition]
"Babouches and Women" arose from a desire to express a feeling towards women, more specifically, Arab women. Demonstrating their role in today’s society, their customs, their thoughts, whether free or not, the use of scarves or burqas, served as a starting point for the creation of this collective project which, in this way, invites questioning and comparison of that with the western woman.
Based on this principle, 19 Portuguese and Spanish women artists were invited, each with a particular point of view on the subject, to intervene on a pair of men’s babuchas, footwear used within a traditional Arab family and which, in this context, is intends for them to personify Man." | Renata Carneiro

THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS 2023

THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS 2023

The European Heritage Days are celebrated every year all over Europe.

This year, under the theme "Living Heritage", we intend to explore the practices, places and objects that are now part of our cultural heritage and have been transmitted from generation to generation, adapting, but remaining alive and constantly recreated by communities and groups. , adjusting to their changing cultures, landscapes and the places they inhabit.

In this sense, the Shoe Museum is once again joining this event and has prepared a very special visit and workshop. "By the hands of a shoemaker", transports us to the imagination of what a shoemaker’s workshop would be like. The benches, the tools, the materials, the dirty hands and the hard work of those who spent hours sitting down creating the object that we use the most on a daily basis.

Schedule your visit and discover the many stories of this profession.

The activities are free. Make your registrarion: 256 004 006 | museudocalcado@cm-sjm.pt

A Verdade Dói exhibition

17 March 2023

A Verdade Dói exhibition

On the 7th of March, the exhibition “A Verdade Dói” opened at the Cine-Teatro S. João, in Palmela.
This itinerant exhibition-installation at the Museu do Calçado gives voice to countless women who have seen their lives shattered by acts of violence. There are many and diverse deeply accepted acts of violence, such as genital mutilation or sex trafficking, which, due to social pressure, continue to be practiced. Often justified by cultural traditions, religious dogmas or established power relations, these are acts of violence against women that, in many cases, end up in tolerance and even impunity towards the aggressors.
The sharing of their stories, the darkest moments they lived and the experiences of overcoming them, thus serve as a warning and motivation so that these cases do not happen again, so that they are brought to justice and are not hidden under a cloud of shame and embarrassment. Truth hurts! Talking is reliving everything that happened, but it is also an act of courage and a first step in the healing process.
This exhibition is open from March 7 to 31, 2023, at the Cine-Teatro S. João, then passing through the Municipal Market of Pinhal Novo, between April 4 and May 4, 2023.
For more information see the website of the Municipality of Palmela.
