BABOUCHES AND WOMEN

04 January 2022

BABOUCHES AND WOMEN

The exhibition "Babouches and women" came from a need to express a feeling about woman, more specifically, about the Arab woman.

To prove her role in today’s society, her traditions, her thoughts, being free or not, the use of the headscarf or of the burka, set the starting point for the creation of this project trying, in this way, to reflect about and compare her with Western woman.

On this basis, 19 female artists were invited to intervein each over a pair of a masculine babouche, shoe wore in the daily life of a traditional family and whose medium act as the embodiment of man.

The project that already toured between Portugal and France, counted with the participation of both Portuguese and foreign women artists, all with a unique point of view about this theme.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and alerting to the increase acts of violence that have been enforced upon Arab women by historically fundamentalist, patriarchal and sexist societies, such as the Afghan, this exhibition-installation invites you to reflect and discuss about the role of Woman and her rights in contemporary society.
